10 First Lines Game

At Artemis' suggestion, I'm playing fast and loose with the rules and including original fiction too. I feel like I don't talk about my writing in much detail and many of these projects are not online, so I've included some context!

When Gareth Last gets to the top of the stairs to his office on Germantown Ave, someone is already standing there, waiting. “Latent Defects”, last worked on today. Latent Defects is a bi 1980s detective novel I started during NaNoWriMo 2018 and have been working on since. I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I’m getting close to a version I'd be comfortable asking for feedback on! HMU if we're mutuals and you want to read a 350-page manuscript soon (realistically a few months from now).

Kim closes his Mnemotechnique A6 and aligns his pen beside it on the desk. “Boot Black”, last worked on today. I started writing this fic about an undernegotiated BDSM scene between Kim Kitsuragi and Harry du Bois in February because of an intoxicated tag I left on this poor, unsuspecting artist’s drawing of Kim Kitsuragi. It's nearly finished.

He shows him the picture. “Rabbit Vector.” “This is Not a Virtual Simulation”, last worked on March 2023. This year I started outlining a new version of a very old cyberpunk heist novel project. I'm still in the R&D phase, but I did write a first line (or two).

PROBLEM: Lieutenant Kitsuragi seems repressed. “Thought Acquired: Manic Pixie Dream Detective”, finished February 2023. I wrote this Kim/Harry short in the style of Disco Elysium’s Thought Cabinet. An amusing exercise.

It doesn’t feel right to be back at the new school in Trenton so soon, after spending last night watching the shamash until it went out with his siblings. “That’s How Accidents Happen”, finished October 2022. A Latent Defects short about the love interest Luke Whittaker’s adolescent crush on his high school shop teacher.  

The first 30% of Hermann’s flare came from his and Newton’s ill-advised drift with the Kaiju fetus. “It’s the Weather, You Imbecile”, finished September 2022. After joining AO3 and revising my old fics to upload them there, the spirit of 2013 possessed me to write this Pacific Rim porn.

At Goodwill in boy mode, I watch for other shoppers in the mirror above the racks. “#191970 Midnight Blue” for The HTML Colors Zine, finished April 2022. I had a blast writing ten 50-word stories inspired by HTML colors for this zine I found out about on Twitter. Artemis also has some work in here!

A man tried to sell me a daydream today. Adaptive Daydreaming”, last worked on December 2021. One of a few ideas I have in a universe loosely inspired by William Gibson’s “simstim” technology (my version is a device called the SenShare). This one is also inspired by bullshit-artist corporate coaches.

He’s glad he’s sitting on the exam table, because the patterned cotton johnny is too small. “The Transformation”, last worked on January 2021. This was going to be a short story about a doctor dismissing a fat character’s strange symptoms, which turn out to be the lead-up of the character turning into a terrible (yet awesome) monster.

Connor remembers enough to know it wasn’t her fault. “Neural Feedback Loop”, finished/last worked on September 2020. Another SenShare device story. In this one, a cyclist disabled by a car accident takes revenge by using the SenShare to force the pain of her injuries onto the driver.

What have we learned today?

Unlike Artemis, I rarely if ever start a story with a line of dialogue

Despite my best efforts, ~70% of my recent work features a man as the main character

Most of the fanfiction I write is porn, while most of the original fiction I write is not

I tend to start with a zoomed-out generalization, a habit I do not love about myself

Feels fitting that on a day where I’m FUCKING PISSED ABOUT EVERYTHING (ie, I hit a wall at about 12:30 and have been operating on negative spoons and less sleep since then) that the Avs lose AGAIN, I have an unsatisfying dinner (only after I go to the store after the gym to get literally two things and then realize when I get home that it would be much faster to just boil some pasta even though that’s not really what I want, but I am SO hungry), my thumb starts getting inflamed again, Artemis REFUSES to stay out of the plants until I lose my patience and yell at her, and to TOP IT ALL FUCKING OFF

THE FUCKING SMOKE ALARM GETS SET OFF BY MY SHOWER EVEN THOUGH I HAVE THE WINDOW FULLY OPEN

I am also stressing myself out about a potluck for the ling department happening tomorrow night that I just found out about, even though I’m not even sure it would be a good choice for my mental health to go (because I am not satisfied enough with my post-academic position to not be incredibly envious of people who are still gainfully employed as linguists, or even just as salaried, non-micromanaged employees who happen to also be doing the exact work that I wish I were doing), and would either be rushed and show up late, show up chill and on time empty handed, or show up chill and on time with some kind of grocery store food (there’s not even a Trader Joe’s in that direction so I couldn’t even fake a nice-ish charcuterie platter)

Like unless I’m really feeling it, why stress myself out about it!!!

ALSO I was feeling incredibly sad about the prospect of seeing Artemis (and therefore potentially also my partner when scone gets here permanently) for only three hours today (THREE HOURS?!) because I went to the gym and the grocery store after work and I knew I’d be putting us both to bed around now, and I freed her from the cathroom basically ten minutes before I went to work… what the fuck kind of life is that. There was no goddamn reason for me to be at work in the office today. I knew that going. If I could decide when I was going to be in the office, I would have stayed home. I HATE that I can’t make my own schedule anymore, or at least that I have to get approval to work from home. WHAT IS THE FUCKING POINT. She’s only my CAT and I’m sad I can’t see her for more than three hours! WHT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WHEN SCONE GETS HERE.

I am really overtired and I’m blowing things out of proportion and getting really worked up about things and basically just throwing a tantrum but OH MY FUCKING GOD I JUST WANT TO SCREAM AND THE FUCKING SMOKE DETECTOR WAS THE LAST FUCKING STRAW

Present Time

Artemis Pulling up the abandoned house, three hours away from mystic falls gave me chills. I pulled my sunglasses off and got out, looking around "haven't been this close in centuries" I sighed and made the walk to the house but stopped as another car pulled up. The man who got out was someone I knew very well. Elijah Mikaelson or also known as my father.

I turned back around and headed into he house "rosemary how nice to see you after almost half a millennium" I smirked "is there somewhere we can talk?"

"Yea in here. You'll have to forgive the house" "oh, no. What's a little dirt?" I said folding my arms "we completely understand" Elijah said closing the door.

She pulled us into a room and I sat down on the arm of the chair while Elijah explored the room "so tell me, what gives you the courage to call me?" Elijah said "and me should I say" I said crossing my arms as I leaned back on the chair.

"I want me freedom, from both of you. I'm tired of running, Are you in a position to grant me that?" "I have complete authority to grant pardon to you and your little pet-"

"What is his name these days?" I chuckled humorlessly "Trevor?" "If I so see fit" "Katerina Petrova?" He looked up at her "I'm listening" he said as he walked to the chair I was on and sat down on the seat.

"she didn't burn in the church in 1864" "continue" he said as he picked my hand up and looked at my daylight ring "she survived" he looked up at rosemary still holding my hand for some reason.

"Where is she?" "You don't seem surprised by this?" She said looking between the two of us "oh, when you called and invited me into this armpit of civilisation...which is a mere three hours from the town, we know as mystic falls, I surmised it had everything to do with Katerina" rosemary looked to me as I folded my leg over the other "I've had bump ins with that skank over the last century so I knew she was alive"

I pulled my hand from his making him look at me but I kept my eyes on rosemary "do you have her in your possession?" Elijah said "No. But I have better. I have her doppelgänger"

I looked down at Elijah when I heard him scoff "that's impossible. Her family line ended with her. I know that for a fact" I stood up "then the facts are wrong" I sighed "so rosemary what am I here for?"

"I found the doppelgänger you were looking for" I crossed my arms "then let's go see her shall we?" "Yes I would like to see the Petrova doppelgänger you speak of" Elijah said standing behind me "Elijah, Artemis, you are a man and woman of honour, your to be trusted but I wanna hear you say it again"

I looked behind me at Elijah to see him looking at me. I turned back with a sigh "you have my word that I will pardon you" I said "you have my word as well" she hesitated but then spoke "follow me"

We walked into a room where two brunettes stood. As soon as they turned around I was in front of the doppelgänger I had been looking for. I could hear her human rapid heart beat as I stood close to her "hello there"

I smiled but it fell when tears fell from her eyes "well we have a long journey ahead of us. We should be going" Elijah said to the Katerina lookalike. "Please don't let them take us" the lookalike said "Come. I will not hurt you" I said holding my hand out.

She hesitated but took my hand. We walked to the stairs. But Trevor spoke "I'm truly very sorry, two the both of you "your apology is not necessary. I give you your freedom from me" I said with a bored expression before turning to walk up the stairs "oh, no, your apology isn't necessary" Elijah said circling him "Yes. Yes it is. You trusted me with Katerina and I failed you"

From the top of the stairs I watched what Elijah did "yes you are the guilty one and Rose aided you because she was loyal to you. That I honour. Where was your loyalty?" he said finally coming to a stop in front of Trevor "I beg for forgiveness" he said quietly "so granted" on instinct I lifted my hand and wrapped it 'round the girl's eyes to avoid seeing the dismembered head.

"AHHHH!!" Rosemary took a step towards him but Elijah spoke up "don't rose, now that you are free" "come" he said stepping towards the girl "what about the moonstone?!"

I had no more use being here so I turned the girl and started walking through the house "wait! No please don't take her!" I heard the girl yell towards me but I didn't stop walking. Elijah tried for more information to the point he compelled it out of her.

Suddenly glass shattering was heard in the foyer. I sped to the foyer to find no one there "come, we must go" I said gently holding her arm. As we made it to the door Elijah sped out with Rosemary and the lookalike "up here" I knew that voice "down here" and that voice. Vampires sped past grabbing Rosemary and he lookalike

"Excuse me! To whom it may concern. You're making a grave mistake if you think that you can beat me. You can't. You hear that? I repeat, you can not beat me. So I want the girl on the count of three or heads will roll. Do we understand each other?"

"I'll come with you, just please don't hurt my friends they just wanted to help me out" Elijah sped up closer to her "what game are you playing with me?"

Suddenly the girl pulled out what I assume was a vervain grenade and threw it at Elijah. I let go of my doppelgänger and sped over to him making sure he was ok. He looked at me confused but before anything could be said a wooden stake was shot our way.

Elijah shielded me with his body before quickly turning around and going after Stefan. I sped back to the girl as Stefan tackled Elijah making them both fall down he stairs.

Elijah was the first to get up but before he could do anything to Stefan, Damon came at him with the stake Elijah made, pinning him to the door just as we moved out of the way.

Rosemary looked between us before speeding off. The lookalike ran down into Stefan's arms but once she realized I was still here she became scared again "you" they both turned to see me "Artemis?" Stefan said with a smile as he walked over and hugged me.

"You two still getting yourself into trouble?" I chuckled as Damon shrugged his shoulders "what are you doing? She tried to take Amy" they looked between the lookalike and me "I need Amy? Was it?" I said turning to the girl to which she nodded before turning back to the boys "to help me with something" "let's all go home and you can explain" I nodded.

Amy rode with me "why do you need me?" "My brother Andreas is the most feared of my original family and those that fear him are desperate for his approval.

Word gets out that the doppelgänger exists there'll be a line of vampires eager to take you to him and I can't have that" "isn't that what you're trying to do?" "Let's just say my goal is not to break his curse" I said keeping my eyes on the road "what is your goal then?"

"Andreas's obsessions have made him paranoid. He's a recluse. He trust only those in his immediate circle" "like you?" I looked at Amy for a moment before back at the road "not anymore" "you don't know where he is, do you?" She said turning to me.

My silence gave her her answer "so your trying to use me to draw him out" "well to do that I need you to stay put And stop trying to get yourself killed" I said as we pulled up at the Salvatore boarding house "how do I know your telling the truth"

"Well, if I wasn't truthful all your family would be dead and I would be taking you to Andreas right now but instead, I'm here and prepared to offer you a deal" I said looking at her with a serious look "what kind of deal?"

"Do nothing. Do nothing, Live your life, stop fighting. And then, when the time is right you and I should draw Andreas out Together, and I'll make certain your friends remain unharmed"

"And then what?" "Then I kill him" "just like that?" "just like that" " I'm a woman of my word Amy I make a deal I keep a deal" "but how are you gonna keep everyone safe" she said as we got out of the car "I have my ways don't you worry on that" I said as I came to a stop in front of her "so do we have a deal?" I said putting my hand out. She hesitated but grabbed my hand and shook it "now let's head inside shall we?"

IPHIGENIA'S ANCIENT CAUTIONARY MYTH STILL RESONATES – by David D. Fowler & Aeon 999

MFF marks INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, and WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH, by exploring an iconic work of art from many centuries ago. EURIPIDES' tragedy, IPHIGENIA IN AULIS, is one of the greatest anti-war statements ever created; and it is also a powerful commentary on the plight of women down through the ages.  

EURIPIDES' powerful drama focuses on the dilemma facing KING AGAMEMNON, when the gods order him to sacrifice his own daughter. It can also be seen as a protofeminist work – highlighting perils faced by women and girls, when they are part of a militaristic, male-oriented culture with authoritarian religious leaders. Various traditions of this myth are embodied by the paintings in our image gallery.

This story is at the heart of our special feature: IPHIGENIA, the 1977 epic masterpiece, by ZORBA THE GREEK director MICHAEL CACOYANNIS. It is one of the finest depictions of a Greek tragedy, which takes a few imaginative artistic liberties with the conventions of that art form. Chief among its virtues are the powerhouse performances of IRENE PAPAS, as Queen Clytemnestra; and TATIANA PAPAMOSKOU as her daughter Iphigenia.

The videos embedded above include an extended trailer from this film – along with a graphic novel portrayal of the death of Iphigenia; and an experimental theatre adaptation of Agamemnon's ritual murder of his daughter. As an alternative metaphor, we have also included accounts of the biblical legend of Abraham being called to sacrifice his son Isaac. One is a poignant song by LEONARD COHEN; and the other a powerful depiction of WWI poet WILFRED OWEN's apocalyptic take on the same story.

An old Chinese proverb calls women "THE OTHER HALF OF THE SKY". In keeping with our desire to honor the respect being shown to women worldwide on this particular day, one of our playlists offers eloquent articles debunking stereotypes about FEMINISM. We also include items dealing with the history and meaning of these holidays, embodying more progressive attitudes toward women.

We present various retellings of Iphigenia's story, and related myths, in movies, plays, audiobooks, and operas. This includes works by composers such as CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD GLUCK, BENJAMIN BRITTEN, WAYNE SHORTER, SERGEY TANEYEV, NICOLE V. GAGNÉ, and DAVID AVIDOR. We also offer different versions of Euripides' companion piece, IPHIGENIA IN TAURIS – which tells an alternative tale, wherein the heroine is supernaturally rescued from her father's sacrifice by the goddess Artemis.

We feature works created by acclaimed directors such as PETER HALL and ANDREI KONCHALOVSKY, as well as another outstanding Cacoyannis film, THE TROJAN WOMEN. Performers include MARIA CALLAS, KATHARINE HEPBURN, VANESSA REDGRAVE, GENEVIEVE BUJOLD, ISABELLA ROSSELLINI, ARMAND ASSANTE, GRETA SCACCHI, BERNADETTE PETERS, ERIC ROBERTS, GERALDINE CHAPLIN, CHRISTOPHER LEE and ESPERANZA SPALDING.

It should be noted that some of these videos are by talented amateurs; thus, there are occasional technical issues, and a few have overly lengthy introductions. Nevertheless, they are well worth watching, if you overlook these very minor flaws. Most of the foreign language productions have English subtitles, sometimes accessed via the CC feature on YouTube videos.

We end with a section of works dealing with the fates of characters from Euripides' plays – and depictions of the Trojan War and its aftermath, by notables such as AESCHYLUS and HOMER. But first, we present further interpretations of the story of Isaac from the Book Of Genesis, one of human history's most enduring tales of child sacrifice. This is followed by the extraordinary Cacoyannis film; its availability, in a good quality copy, is what inspired us to do this post for Women's Month.

okay I feel like this has been talked about before but wow why would you think romans could win a war against greeks? 😭 practically speaking, yes, it would make more sense that CJ as a well oiled wat machine would win but CHB has so many advantages over them let me list some off the top of my head

• home field advantage - CHB is more aware of the valley, they have grown up here and played hundreds of capture the flag matches, they know every nook and cranny, every blade of grass, every little pebble, watch CJ fighters activate some weird mechanism and fall into a trap lmao

• historically speaking, the romans practically copy pasted greek gods so I think that destroying the greeks would cause a lot of damage to their own existence while the greeks could get away with destroying romans without any consequences to themselves

• CHB kids are more attuned to their powers, more attuned to their gods, more attuned to nature, their camp director is literally dionysus while CJ hasn't seen a god in like forever I don't think CJ is ready for that kind of exposure to powers and gods so many of them would just crack

• greeks fight for survival, romans fight for glory/honour whatever survival is a far more terrifying thing, sharpening the edges of hope until it's a weapon

• and while it may seem like romans have more numbers, if we think back to battle of manhattan it's obvious that the greeks could easily increase their numbers too they have so many reinforcements at their disposal - nature spirits, party ponies, the cyclops from poseidon's forges, the hunters of artemis, the armies of undead like I don't think CAMP I haven't left this bordered city in ages JUPITER is prepared to fight that kind of crazy shit

• and please greeks are naturals at fighting together we haven't seen a single time where they had to shout order out loud to form an attack formation like the romans keep doing like what "senate ave–" cue arrow through throat

• and we've seen that most romans fight with a mundane weapon like the only ones with magical weapons are jason and frank who's spear was gone after three uses while the greeks literally run around with weapons gifted by gods like percy has the blade of a titaness, which was wielded by heracles himself, thalia has a spear by zeus and a working replica of his shield, clarisse had an electric spear and apollo campers could spare arrows given to them by their dad, annabeth has her magical cap from athena etc.

• greeks are trained by an immortal centaur that is the brother of the eldest gods and romans are trained by crappy generals that believe their army should be made up of child soldiers despite a city full of adults (jason was two when he first joined the legion if you think everyone is as amazing as you think then think again)

• and bestie did you say the greeks die too fast, too young cuz they are "untrained" let me please remind you that in botl apollo campers fought against a drakon while they were half asleep, half armoured and in their pyjamas and were able to defend camp against it

• greeks defended olympus and the thrones of the gods with their meagre numbers when kronos laid siege with an army of thousands if you think they can't defeat the tiny roman army that gets confused as soon as they lose a commanding officer then you haven't read tlo properly

SO IN CONCLUSION what I'm saying is that if the romans were half as good as you think they are they would have been able to defend themselves against polybotes and his tiny army in their own home (which already has all the numbers of warriors you think would make so much difference) but they couldn't they literally only won cuz percy came in with that fancy lightning eagle and tyson and mrs. o'leary destroyed the monsters the CJ campers could barely fight

saying CJ would win in a battle against CHB is like saying mortals could win against gods simply because they have a huge population

• if we go back to som we see that the apollo campers can nock like half a dozen arrows at once while romans have no respect for archers like these crazy children of the sun would shoot down CJ campers before they can start falling into formation much less get close enough to CHB defences

• children of ares can curse weapons like sir? if they wished all of the CJ army would lose their weapons within minutes what do you think these powerless legacies would be able to do against the greeks who have trained their raw powers all their lives? NOTHING that's what

• the golden fleece is a strong defense too even if it doesn't fight physically like I'm pretty sure its healing and strengthening abilities would extend beyond the valley and to the demigods when in war like CJ wouldn't even be able to cross the borders CHB has a safe haven where they are protected while CJ does not and lol peleus would destroy the romans so fast

• all this and I haven't even gotten to the destruction and carnage the likes of thalia, nico, percy, clarisse, leo etc could cause like what makes you think PERCY what did they do to my city JACKSON would let CJ destroy CHB because he has like three friends there who aren't even actually gonna fight in this war? my bro would level new rome within minutes the same way he caused mt. st. helens to explode
